The Surface Area of an Ellipsoid calculator uses the Knud Thomsen's formula to compute an approximation of the surface area of an ellipsoid based on the lengths of the semi-axes.Ellipsoid.png 

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

  • (a) the length of semi-axis a
  • (b) the length of semi-axis b
  • (c) the length of semi-axis c

Surface Area of an Ellipsoid (SA): The calculator returns the surface area in square meters.  However, this can be automatically converted to many other area units (e.g. square inches or acres) via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Knud Thomsen formula for the surface area of an ellipsoid is:

        `SA = 4*pi* ( ((a*b)^1.6075 + (a*c)^1.6075 + (b*c)^1.6075)/3)^(1/1.6075)`
