The **Carbon Tax** calculator computes the total tax cost in carbon tax associated with the consumption (burning) of an amount (V) of a specified fuel (F) and on a carbon tax rate.

**Carbon Tax (CT):** The calculator returns the total tax in U.S. dollars. However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The formula for Carbon Tax is:

CT = V_{gal} • CO2_{lb/gal} • CTX_{$/lb}

where:

- CT is the total carbon tax
- V is the volume of fuel
- CO2 is the pounds of CO2 produced by burning a specific fuel
- CTX is the carbon tax rate

This calculator compute the pounds of CO2 based on the fuel type and known CO2 rates per gallon fuel (see below) and the volume of fuel consumed.

Washington Examiner (Siegel) reported on December 19^{th} 2018 that Senators Chris Coons and Jeff Flake “introduced a carbon tax bill to combat climate change, just days before the end of the current session of Congress.” The article stated that the bill “is similar to bipartisan legislation introduced in the House last month that would tax carbon emissions and return the proceeds to American households as a dividend.” and that “both the House and Senate bills would impose a tax of $15 per ton of carbon dioxide in 2019, increasing $10 each year, rising to nearly $100 per ton by 2030.”
