The Gas Mileage Equation computes the average gas mileage based on the starting odometer reading, the current odometer reading and the total gallons used between the two.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
Gas Mileage (GM): The calculator returns the distance traveled in miles and the average gas mileage in miles per gallons. However these can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu. The calculator also returns the mileage deduction or expense value for the year per the IRS.
To calculate the gas mileage you have to first obtain odometer reading or reset the mileage counter when you fill up your gas tank. Then the next time, you fill up you gas tank again, obtain the mileage between the two gas fill up based on the odometer reading or the mileage counter. Then divided the difference between the mileage by the gas filled in the second time to obtain the Gas Mileage. The formula to compute gas mileage from two odometer readings and gallons of fuel is:
MPG = (COR - POR)/G

International travel poses a several challenges, even if it's just over the boarder to Canada or Mexico. First, there is the conversion from liters to gallons, which is fixed, and then there's the conversion between the US dollar and other currency, which is constantly changing. vCalc is here to help. We know how to do the math and we keep track of currency fluctuations, and the result makes it easier on you.
Here are four examples, US dollar per gallon from
Country | $1.00 Equivalent
Canadian Dollar | 1.347 CAD
Euro | 0.938 EUR | |
Great Britain Pound | 0.814 GBP
Mexican Peso | 17.198 MXN |
The formula to convert Euros per Liter to U.S. Dollars per Gallon is:
`DPG = € EPL * (3.7854 " Liters")/(1.0 " U.S. Gallons") * ($1.0 " USD")/( "€ 0.938 EUR")`
The formula to convert Canadian Dollars per Liter to U.S. Dollars per Gallon is:
`DPG = Can$ CPL * (3.7854 " Liters")/(1.0 " U.S. Gallons") * ($1.0 " USD")/( "$ 1.347 CAD")`
The formula to convert Great Britain Pounds (Sterling) per Liter to U.S. Dollars per Gallon is:
`DPG = £ PPL * (3.7854 " Liters")/(1.0 " U.S. Gallons") * ($1.0 " USD")/( "£ 0.814 GBP")`
The formula to convert Mexican Pesos per Liter to U.S. Dollars per Gallon is:
`DPG = ? PPL * (3.7854 " Liters")/(1.0 " U.S. Gallons") * ($1.0 " USD")/( "?17.198 MXN")`
