The Weight of Sand calculator computes the mass or weight of sand based on the volume (V) of sand and the condition of sand (wet/dry loose/packed).

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose the preferred units and enter the following:

• (V)  This is the volume of sand.
• (SC)  Choose the condition of the sand
• dry loose sand, dry sand, dry packed sand, wet sand, packed wet sand

Weight of Sand (M): The calculator returns the weight or mass of the sand in kilograms.  However this can be automatically converted to other mass or weight units (e.g. pound, tons) via the pull-down menu.

#### The Math / Science

The formula for mass or weight of anything is as follows:

To query the mean density (mD or μD) of many common substances, elements, liquids and materials, CLICK HERE (e.g. the density of water is 1,000 kg/m³.

#### Density of Sand

The density of sand is affected by whether the sand is packed (rammed) or loose, and whether it is wet or dry.  When it is packed, the grains of sand are forced into tighter formation and more matter is in the volume.  When the sand is wet, water is in the sand, also affecting the total matter in the volume.  The mean density of the different conditions of sand are as follows:

• Loose Sand:  1442 kg/m3.  This is dry sand that has been moved or otherwise agitated to loosen the natural packing process.
• Dry Sand: 1602 kg/m3. This is sand in its natural undisturbed form where it has been partially packed by rain and gravity over time but is now dry
• Packed Sand: 1682 kg/m3.  This is sand that has been manually or mechanically packed (rammed)
• Wet Sand:  1922 kg/m3.  This is sand that has been standing in a natural setting and naturally compressed that is now wet.
• Wet Packed Sand: 2082 kg/m3.  This is packed sand that is also nearly saturated with water.
