The Distance Between A Point and Line calculator provides the distance from a point (x, y) to a line of the form Ax+By+C=0.

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

• (A) This is the x coefficient in the line
• (B) This is the y coefficient in the line
• (C) This is the constant in the line formula.
• (x) This is the x value of the point.
• (y) This is the y value of the point

Distance between the point and a line (D): The calculator returns the distance.

#### The Math / Science

If the formula of the line is put in the form Ax+By+C = 0, the formula for the distance between a point and a line is:

D =  (|A*x+B*y+C|) / sqrt(A^2+B^2)

where:

• D is the distance between the point and the line
• A is the x coefficient in the line formula
• B is the y coefficient in the line formula
• C is the constant in the line formula
• x is the x position value of the point
• y is the y position value of the point
