The Echo Time calculator computes the time delay between an original sound and its echo based on the distance to the bounce surface and the velocity of the sound.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:

• (D) Distance to Bounce Surface
• (v) Velocity of Sound in Medium (e.g., air)

Echo Time (ET): The echo time is returned in seconds.  However, these can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The Echo Time equation computes the time for sound to travel twice the distance to the bounce surface (there and back).  The formula is:

ET = 2*D/v

where:

• ET = Echo Time
• D = distance to bounce surface
• v = velocity of sound

Sound Velocity in Medium

• Speed of Sound in Air = 342.2 meters per second
• Speed of Sound in Water = 1,480 to 1,490 meters per second
