The Echo Surface Distance calculator estimates the distance to the bounce surface of an echo based on the echo time delay and
the velocity of the sound.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
- (ED) Echo Time Delay
- (v) Velocity of Sound in Medium (e.g., air)
Echo Surface Distance (D): The distance is returned in meters. However, these can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.
The Math / Science
The Echo Surface Distance equation estimates the distance to the bounce surface of an echo. The formula is:
D = (v * ET)/2
where:
- ET = Echo Time
- D = distance to bounce surface
- v = velocity of sound
Sound Velocity in Medium
- Speed of Sound in Air = 342.2 meters per second
- Speed of Sound in Water = 1,480 to 1,490 meters per second
Sound Calculators
