The **saturation ratio** R_{S} is the ratio of the water contained in a sample volume to the volume of voids `V_V` and represents the amount of volume that can still absorb more water. The formula for saturation ratio is:

R_{S} = V_{w} / V_{v}

where:

In engineering application the saturation ratio indicate how far from saturation the soil is.
