The **Volume of a Capsule** calculator computes volume of a capsule, * Capsule* also known as a spherocylinder.

**INSTRUCTIONS:** Choose units and enter the following:

- (
**r**) Radius (half the diameter) of Spherical ends of the capsule. - (
**l**) Overall length of the capsule. Note, the length must be equal to or greater than two times the radius (2xr).

**Capsule Volume (V):** The calculator computes the volume in cubic meters. However this can be automatically converted in the many other volume units (e.g. cubic feet, gallons, liters) via the pull-down menu.

Geometrically, a capsule is a cylinder of any length (l) with two hemispheres on either end where the radius (r) of the cylinder is equal to the radius of the hemispheres. See diagram.

The formula for the volume of a capsule is:

V = π•r²•(l-2r) + 4/3•π•r³

where:

- V is the volume of the capsule (spherocylinder)
- l is the total length of the capsule
- r is the radius of the spherical ends

Spherocylinders are found in many applications. The most common are in capsule containers such small pills and large containers such as liquid or gas transport containers.
