Head joint width, the thickness of the vertical joint between adjacent bricks is able to be wider than the bed joint. The max width considered useable is 3/4 inch for the head joint versus only 1/2 inch for the base joint. This is because making the bed joint thicker than this will adversely affect the strength of the wall.
