The Vertical Velocity function calculates the vertical velocity of an object after some time t based on the initial velocity and the force of gravity.

Vertical Velocity (v_y): Calculator returns the vertical velocity in meters per second. However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

The Math / Science

The formula for the vertical velocity is:

v_y = v₀ - g⋅t

where:

• vy  = vertical velocity at time (t)
• v0 = initial vertical velocity
• g = acceleration due to gravity is assumed to be the gravitational acceleration at sea level
• t = elapsed time

The force of gravity creates a constant negative acceleratation.  When an object is launched with an upward motion, the vertical component of that motion will decelerate based on that force over a period of time.
