The Number of Stringers calculator computes how
many stringers you need for your stairs based on a the width of the stairs and max separation.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
- (W) Width of Stairs
- (S) Stringer Spacing Max (default: 16")
Number of Stringers (nS): The calculator returns the number of stair stringers needed. It also returns the ideal (even) spacing of the stringers. Note: This function will always return at least 2 stringers as you need two stringers for your stairs.
The Math / Science
- This algorithm assumes there will always be at least two (2) stringers on either end.
- The number of stringers is simply the width divided by the spacing rounded up plus one for the first stringer.
- For the most structurally sound framing with the most even load on the stringers, they should be evenly spaced. This algorithm returns the ideal on-center spacing of the stringers.
