Medicine

Medicine is the applied science or practice of the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. It encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness in human beings.
Contemporary medicine applies health science, biomedical research, and medical technology to diagnose and treat injury and disease, typically through medication or surgery, but also through therapies as diverse as psychotherapy, external splints & traction, prostheses, biologics, ionizing radiation and others.

The word medicine can also refer to drugs or medication.

The field of Medicine or modern health care involves an interdisciplinary team of highly trained health professionals besides medical practitioners including: nurses, emergency medical technicians and paramedics, laboratory scientists, pharmacists, podiatrists physiotherapists, respiratory therapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, dietitians, and bioengineers.

The main branches of medicine are:

  • Basic sciences of medicine:where everyone gets trained in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biomechanics, Biostatistics, Biophysics, Cytology, Embryology, Endocrynology, Epidemiology, Genetics, Histology, Immunology, Medical physics, Microbiology, Molecular biology, Neuroscience, Nutrition science, Pathology, Pharmacology, Photobiology, Physiology, Radiobiology, Toxicology.
  • Medical specialties:  These usually fit into one of two broad categories: "Medicine" E.g. Cardiology, Gastroentology, Pediatrics,  etc,  and "Surgery." e.g. General, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic, Plastic, Trauma, Vascular, Urology , etc.
  • Interdisciplinary fields, where different medical specialties are mixed to function in certain occasions. E.g.
