The Depth of Field calculator computes the depth of field based on the f-number, circle of confusion, focal length and the distance to the subject.
INSTRUCTIONS: Choose units and enter the following:
Depth of Field (DoF): The calculator returns the depth of field in kilometers. However, this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.
The Depth of Field equation computes the hyperfocal distance1, the nearest focus distance at which the depth of field extends to infinity. If you focus a camera at the hyperfocal distance, the resulting image has the largest possible depth of field for a given f-number.
If you focus beyond the hyperfocal distance, the far depth of field does not increase because it already already extends to infinity. if you focus beyond the hyperfocal distance it does decrease the depth of field in front of the subject, which decreases the total depth of field.
The Depth of Field formula is:
`DoF approx (2* f * c * FL^2 * D^2) / (FL^4 - (f^2*c^2 *D^2))`
