`SG = "sg lookup"["Agate"]`

2.6

The **Specific Gravity of Gems** function provides the specific gravity of various gems and minerals. Note that the specific gravity for Tanzanite is more specifically for Tanzanite (ziosite).

**INSTRUCTIONS:** Enter the following:

- (
**GEM**) Choose the type of gem from the list.

**Specific Gravity of Gem (SG):** The calculator returns the specific gravity.

Specific gravity (specific weight) is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of a reference substance. For gems the specific gravity reference substance is water. Therefore, the formula for Specific Gravity is:

SG = `gamma / (gamma_W)`

where:

- SG = Specific Gravity
- `gamma` = density of gem
- `gamma_W` = density of water
