The Slant Range using Vectors calculator computes the slant range (R) from a ground station to an object (satellite or aircraft) based on the station and object position vectors.

INSTRUCTIONS: Enter the following:

• (PG) This is the ground position vector in kilometers (comma separated vector)
• (PV) This is the vehicle (satellite or aircraft) position vector in kilometers (comma separated vector)

Slant Range (R):  The range is returned in kilometers.  However this can be automatically converted to compatible units via the pull-down menu.

#### The Math / Science

The slant range is computed from vectors as follows:

1. Compute the difference vector from the Vehicle to the Ground
2. Compute the magnitude of the difference vector.

The result is the Slant Range.

This calculator currently does not check to see if the vehicle is above the horizon.  Note, one can also compute the slant range based on the altitudes of the ground station and vehicle and the elevation angel.
