# Description

The painters calculator provides paint estimates including the number of gallons needed and their cost for interior walls and ceilings. The pricing is from nationally advertised web sites (e.g. Lowe's and Home Depot's).

The formulas included the amount of paint needed for individual walls, all the walls within a room (royal blue in diagram) and a ceiling (light grey in diagram).  Each formula calculates the area to be painted, and then based on the paint or primer estimates the amount of paint or primer needed.  A gallon of good paint typically covers 400 ft2.  A gallon of primer typically covers 200 ft2.

The pricing formulas let you enter a price per gallon (PPG) and uses that price and the computations for the amount of paint or primer needed to estimate the total cost.   The Paint Price Survey pricing information is for several brands and updated monthly.  The brands include:

• Behr
• Valspar
• Gliddon
• Olympic

### Survey Data

One  should use the pricing for paint or primer that can be bought locally.  However, the following prices are recent U.S. dollar costs for different price ranges of paint and primer in the United States:

All prices are for gallons of paint.  Of course there are other options.  Pints, quarts, 2 gallon buckets and 5 gallon buckets are common in the Untied States.

Note:  All the data here are estimates.  Prices may differ at the local stores, and the amount of coverage may differ based on numerous criteria including how thickly the paint or primer is applied.  Nonetheless, we hope you find this to be useful, and would welcome corrections, comments and advice below.
