Stroke Volume (SV) , in cardiovascular physiology, is the volume of blood pumped out by the left ventricle of the heart in one contraction or beat measured in mL/beat (millilitres per beat). That notwithstanding, the term stroke volume can also apply to the right ventricles of the heart, although it usually refers to the left ventricle.
SV = Stroke Volume
EDV = End Diastolic Volume
ESV = End Systolic Volume
Stroke volume is affected by several factors including:
EXAMPLE
Suppose the heart fills up to 230ml of blood before contraction and leaves 65ml in the heart after contraction, what will the stroke volume?
EDV -ESV = 230ml - 65ml
= 165ml/beat
